When doing it tough, having a strong support network around you and something to believe in goes a long way. Coming to terms with the great and sudden changes which have been thrust upon the world can quite literally knock you off the path you had planned. This can result in chaos, leading feelings of confusion, anxiety and uncertainty.
Over the past few months, I have come to understand my relationship to the Goddess Durga as she has helped me commit to overcoming these challenges and embrace a full, meaningful life. Through yoga and meditation I have channeled her power to tap into my inner strength, understand the gifts I possess in and embrace new opportunities which life has offered me.
Who is Durga? She is a Hindu goddess with long, flowing dark hair depicted sitting atop a lion. She carries with her gifts from the gods to battle devastation and greed plunging the world into chaos. In her eight arms, she holds: a sword, mace, discus, a lotus blossom, conch, bow, trident and a shield. She uses these weapons to destroy the dark forces blocking our path.
Goddess Durga is a symbol of strength and protection. She is a warrior goddess who is primal, instinctive, sensual and fierce. She is summoned to help you feel empowered during challenging times. Goddess Durga is the divine feminine. She is you.
By harnessing the energy of Durga we confront our feelings of doubt, fear and limiting beliefs. She asks us to confront our pride, our ego, even our arrogance which fuel this self doubt. Durga allows us to embrace and understand the darkness so we can say yes to new opportunities and life challenges.
When dark forces arise and interfere in our path, we create a powerful prayer to awaken the feminine within and help restore balance. Through meditation, Durga gives you inner power to transform yourself. She helps you let go of addictions, obstacles and fears which hold you back.
During meditation, Durga allows us to awaken the vital life force within us to begin our healing journey. She teaches us that part of awakening means being willing to confront negativity.
The following mantra to Goddess Durga will help when you need to channel extra strength and wisdom.
- Ya devi sarva bhuteshu, shanti rupera sangsthita
- Ya devi sarva bhuteshu, shakti rupera sangsthita
- Ya devi sarva bhuteshu, matri rupera sangsthita
- Yaa devi sarva bhuteshu, namastasyai, namo namaha
With continued commitment to our meditation practice, Durga’s energy gives us the power to grow, evolve and awaken to a world where anything is possible. We just have to believe in our ability to achieve our greatest desires.
