A few decades ago a care package was known as a food package or survival kit for families and friends. But today, there is a new care package to help us assist others cope with the fast paced life modern society has created. Today’s care package involves a more personal touch, to just be there for someone, without the expectation of receiving something in return.
One of my favourite authors, Oscar Wilde, summed it up perfectly when he said: “to expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect”.
Being there to listen is perhaps the best gift you can give someone. You don’t have to say anything, just be there to listen. Without judgement and without offering your opinions or advice – unless it is asked for.
It is also an opportunity to spend time talking and sharing topics of interest to take their mind off of a problem – if only for a moment. Oscar Wilde had an ability to hold an audience and entertain with his wit and charm. People felt better after spending time in his company.
Next time someone is feeling sad, get a few of your own stories together to share with them. Go out for a coffee or a walk in the park. They will be grateful for your time and it might even create.a stronger bond between you.
When we let go of expectations of receiving something in return, it makes us feel good as well. Expensive gifts are the last thing someone wants when they are feeling down. The feeling of helping someone with a small gesture goes a long way.
