The thought of a new adventure always fills us with excitement. A new place to explore, new people to meet, Another culture to learn about. Yet, the last thing often thought about is our health. It is no fun to find yourself bedridden, sick with a stomach bug when there is an exciting city outside the window to explore.
I am not a fan of scientific dugs, so I prefer to use the natural remedies to help me out in a moment of illness. I have only used prescribed tablets once in my travels and that was for altitude sickness in Peru. However, I discovered they did not completely prevent me from feeling some of the effects as simply slowing down and remaining hydrated would have done.
The following products are those I have always packed in my bag and my go to for any signs of illness.
Aloe Vera Gel
Use this on the plane to reduce the likelihood of catching cold and flu. Each time I get on a plane there has been at least a couple of people coughing and sneezing nearby. Swipe a tiny drop around the inside of your nose. Sounds weird, I know, but you will be thankful when you get off at your destination cold free. It also works well as a skin hydration during long haul flights.
Clears up insect and mosquito bites better than normal antiseptic creams. I found this useful in Italy this summer when a couple of mosquitos decided to bite. After a couple of days of applying papaya lotion, the bites were gone. It really is the new wonder ointment.
The last thing you ned during your summer vacation are mosquito bites on your arms and legs. Tropical strength works best and can deter even the most stubborn mossie.
Vicks Vapour Rub
I have used Vicks forever to chase away the first signs of colds. Again, a small swipe around the inside of your nose – summer or winter – can prevent the chance of you catching a cold.
If you feel the effects of a cold approaching, add a cup of warm lemon juice. Lemons are mostly available in either shops or markets and are the cheap alternative to cold and flu medicines at the pharmacy.
These are just a few natural remedies I always take with me on my travels. What secrets do you have to stay healthy when travelling. Please share your thoughts in the comments, I’d love to hear them.
